Here at Carnaby School of Dance, we're super proud that oodles of our students have opted to have their Year 10 and 11 Work Experience with us over the years: with students who've been with us since they were tiny wanting to spend even more time at CSD!
To that end, introducing... Yasmin! Yasmin is joining us this week for her Work Experience (as well as additional training for her Level 3 Teaching Certification). She'll be helping out with our Weekly Classes, alongside Rehearsals for this year's Show, AND even helping out with admin too!
One of her first tasks was to write a Blog Post on the History of Tap: enjoy..!:
Hi, my name is Yasmin. I am 14 years old and in RAD Grade 6 Ballet, ISTD Grade 6 Tap, and Senior Jazz at Carnaby School of Dance.
I have been a part of the School since I was 18 months old and seeing the
School grow is not only exciting but heartwarming.
From being a very young age, my favourite genre of dance was always tap. It's upbeat
and energetic but also challenging! My favourite part of learning a tap dance is when
you finish the dance with no mistakes. It’s always best to look back and be proud of
what you have done!
7 facts about tap:
Tap is a historical genre. It originated in the early 1800s.
It all started with a blend of African American tribal dances and Irish traditional
dances.
The tap shoe was originally a leather shoe until the mid-1800s where people
added metal taps and nails to make louder sounds.
As America started to gain fame, the British was influenced by their big
Hollywood movies and decided to give tap a try.
It quickly became popular in massive shows in the UK.
The ISTD officially made tap a subject in 1924!
