Heidi Takeover: The History of Jazz Dance

Here at Carnaby School of Dance, we're super proud that oodles of our students have opted to have their Year 10 and 11 Work Experience with us over the years: with students who've been with us since they were tiny wanting to spend even more time at CSD!

To that end, introducing another one of our Work Experience students... the lovely Heidi! Heidi joined us for the week for her Work Experience (as well as additional training for her Level 3 Teaching Certification). She helped out with our Weekly Classes, alongside on Show Day, AND even helping out with admin too!

One of her first tasks was to write a Blog Post on the History of Jazz Dance: enjoy..!:

Hi, my name's Heidi and I’m fourteen years old. I am currently in Grade 5 RAD Ballet, Grade 5 ISTD Tap and Senior Jazz at Carnaby School of Dance. I have been a student at CSD for at least 10 years now and have enjoyed every moment there (see previous page for a photograph of me in my very first Show!).

I particularly enjoy my Jazz lessons as Jazz is my favourite dance genre.

This is partially because Jazz requires a lot of flexibility and I am flexible, and also because it allows for a lot of expression; Jazz is a very fun, high energy but also quite technical genre of dance, which suits me well.

Jazz has a lot of history, beginning in the late 19th-early 20th Century, born from African-American vernacular (local) dances. Its popularity grew with the rise in popularity of Jazz music, due to its syncopated rhythms and improvisational nature, meaning it paired well with the jazz dances becoming popular at the time. It was brought to America via the slave trade.

Jazz dances often involve bent knees, isolated movements and complex movements that would later lead to jazz as we know it today.

I just read this story about student Heidi and her experience at Carnaby School of Dance, and I have to say, it's incredibly inspiring. It's impressive how the school supports its students, allowing them to combine their studies with practical experience and assistance with daily tasks. I liked that Heidi not only participated in classes and performances, but also tried her hand at administrative work, which gives a complete picture of the professional environment. While reading about this, I remembered how I myself follow health and anti-aging practices, so I decided to learn more about additional modern methods of supporting the body at https://ways2well.com/blog/discover-the-benefits-of-a-stem-cell-facelift-at-ways2well . There, they explain in detail how innovative approaches, such as stem cells, help maintain youth…
